The Smith Mountain Lake Civitan Club recently presented a grant check in the amount of $26,416 to Healing Strides. The Foundation for Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (FCIDD) approved the grant request from the SML Civitan Club. The funds will be used for new tack equipment, such as saddles and for new flooring for the indoor arena.
Healing Strides is an equine-assisted therapeutic horse center serving individuals with challenges. It partners humans and equines to create powerful and lasting change in the lives of individuals throughout the community. Some challenges might include Autism, Down's Syndrome, other intellectual/ developmental disabilities, PTSD, and anxiety.
The worldwide mission of Civitan International and therefore, the SML Civitan Club, is to build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.Healing Strides is a great example of this mission.
